|
Fishing operations venture being one of the core activities of KPNB, will jump start the activities of the Consortium. Hence, the acquisition of 10 units of tuna long-line vessels to conduct fishing operations in the Indian Ocean with MITP Port in Batu Maung, Pulau Pinang as its home port, is to enable it to generate recurring income. Tuna operations focus on tuna fishing to cater for the export sashimi market, especially in Japan. It focuses on the trade of fresh and chilled tuna with minimum processing carried out, thus fast tracking the development of the fishing operations of the Consortium. Diversification into other fishing methods in the EEZ waters of Malaysia (that is in the South China Sea) would allow it to explore the potential of pelagic and demersal catches to complement its investment in onshore fisheries facilities and infrastructure. In the initial two years of operations, KPNB will have a fleet of 110 units of fishing vessels comprising of tuna long-liners, purse seiners, trawlers and bottom long-liners. Fishing operations venture would support the down-stream and the value-added activities by providing the crucial need for raw materials. |
