Overview

The role of KPNB as a National Project is wide-ranging. It will need to balance the needs of its shareholders and serve the greater national interest. Hence, KPNB is to endeavour and undertake the national task of managing, operating and over-seeing the integrated activities of deep-sea fishing, fish processing, marketing and distribution.

Thus, the Consortium will be involved in three strategic segments of the fisheries industry, which is Deep-sea Fishing Operations, Fish Processing, and Marketing and Distribution. While these core activities will be central, KPNB intends to reinforce these businesses, by establishing business units in each segment to create and maximize business value.

In the initial two years, KPNB will focus in two areas of operations, tuna fishing in the Indian Ocean and deep-sea fishing within the EEZ waters of Malaysia.

Tuna operations will focus on tuna fishing to cater for the export sashimi market, especially in Japan and other potential market.

Deployment of vessels (comprising of purse seiners, trawlers and bottom long-line) in the South China Sea with ports in Endau, Kuantan, Tok Bali, Tanjung Manis (Sarawak), Labuan and Kota Kinabalu (Sabah) is to diversify into fishing ventures to explore the potential of pelagic and demersal fish. This diversification exercise is to complement KPNB’s investment in onshore fisheries facilities and infrastructure.

KPNB’s strategic approach is to have from the outset economies of scale and a focus on quality to support more sophisticated marketing strategies, and at the same time have the ability and capacity for expansion to support modernized fishing technology, processing methods and the growing markets.
